NORM and TeNORM Disposal
Natural radio activity: NORM e TeNORM
REGULATORY ASPECTS
Material containg NORM
The use of materials containing radionuclides of natural origin is covered by Legislative Decree no. 101 Title IV, Chapter II which regulates both the monitoring of exposure to ionizing radiation for certain work activities involving the use or production of naturally radioactive material and its removal from the regulatory regime.
MITAmbiente operates in the field of NORMS and tenors offering the services of characterization, decontamination and management of materials that also have a not negligible concentration of natural radioisotopes.
The discovery of materials and residues from processing containing radionuclides of natural origin must be managed both in accordance with Legislative Decree no. 101/2020 and in accordance with Legislative Decree no. 152/2006.
From characterization to removal/disposal of natural radionuclides
MITAmbiente assists the manufacturer of NORM and tenors in all management phases starting from the characterization, both quantitative radiometric and chemical-physical. This allows the selection of the suitable supply chain for removal, after assessing the radiological impact of the different related scenarios.
The outcome of the characterization and the radiological risk assessment are the key elements for issuing the approval/acceptability of NORM waste. As regards the contents, treatment is carried out to separate the radioactive material from the uncontaminated material.
MITAmbiente assists the producer/ holder accompanying him in relations with the competent authorities to fulfill the necessary actions and notifications both for carrying out treatments for disposal.
The transport activity is managed by MITAmbiente as a conveyor both of radioactive material falling within the scope of Legislative Decree No. 101/2020 and of special waste referred to in Legislative Decree No. 152/2006.
